DIY Deodorant

Did you know that chemical deodorant is thought by some to be one of the most harmful products in most of our homes? It contains aluminum. Some scientists suggest that aluminum applied near the breasts can cause breast cancer. Scary stuff. So WHY are we putting this right near our lymph nodes?? Right!?

Did you know that you can use several of the oils in your Young Living Premium Starter kit to make your own homemade deodorant?

Here's how it's done. Easy peasy!

Sit a small glass jar in a pan of boiling water with just enough water to come up about 1/2 way up the jar.
Melt 2 tbsp shea butter and 3 tbsp coconut oil over VERY low heat until just melted.
Remove from heat and add 3 tbsp baking soda and 2 tbsp cornstarch.
Stir until smooth.
Add 10 drops lavender, 10 drops purification and 10 drops Frankincense.
Pour into glass storage container and refrigerate until solid. Apply to underarms.

A Day to Remember, but I almost didn't

Today is February 5th.  Four years ago today, after a years long infertility journey, I laid on a hospital exam room table, waiting with bated breath for confirmation of what my heart already knew. My eyes searched and searched for that familiar blinking light on the ultrasound screen, but it was no longer there inside that tiny little body that we had grown to love so much. Then the words came. "I'm so sorry." I'll never forget that moment or any detail of it. Even how the ultrasound tech also had tears in her eyes. The air escaped my body and I couldn't breathe. The silence was eerie. There were no words. We just held each other and cried for what felt like a very long time. I remember thinking they had to be wrong.  At least that's what I tried to convince myself of. As we walked out, one of the doctors cheerily said she hoped to see us back under happier circumstances in three months as if something life changing hadn't just happened. I think I actually offered her a smile. I didn't have the energy to tell her how that wasn't that right thing to say. To walk in with so much hope and being so afraid of the outcome and then to walk out and wish they didn't send you home to wait for the inevitable. You just wanted it to be over. Such a sad sad day.

So, today, four years later, the day was half gone when my wonderful husband asked if there was anything I'd like to do to mark the day in remembrance. I asked him if it was horrible that I hadn't even remembered what day it was and that I didn't have much emotion attached to it anymore. I mean, yes, as I sit back now and reflect, the tears are flowing thinking of that sacred day, but not in longing or sadness really. It's more a feeling of looking back and remembering how far we've come and how much we've overcome and how much hope there is in life. He agreed that he feels the same way.

If you are facing a similar situation in your life right now, please take heart. It will get easier. You won't always feel as devastated as you do this very minute. You will find joy again and you will be able to look back and be grateful for it all, even the really really hard stuff. At least I hope and pray you will.

5-Day Nutritive Cleanse by Megan Jones

Today's post was written by one of the leaders on my team, Megan Jones. Check out her experience with the 5-Day Cleanse by Young Living Essential Oils.

5-Day Nutritive Cleanse: Our Experience

Hi! I’m Megan. My husband and I just recently completed the Young Living 5 Day Nutritive Cleanse. The cleanse comes with Digest & Cleanse softgels, 2 bottles of NingXia Red, and a 26.4oz tub of Balance Complete (Vanilla).

During the cleanse you drink A LOT of NingXia and have 3 meals per day of the Balance Complete. You also have 3 snack times each day.

Going into it I expected to be running to the bathroom, starving, and miserable. I am happy to say that was NOT the case. Neither me, nor my husband, were running to the bathroom. The first day we may have gone more than a normal Monday, but not much.

Andrew did struggle with hunger, but he works around food all day, every day so I’m sure that is what made it challenging for him. I felt satisfied with the drinks and snacks. I loved that the brochure gave us options for all 3 snack times. The choices were great and even included things that my picky husband likes!

Although there were designated snack times throughout the day, by the end of the week we did not need every snack. This was great because shrinking my appetite was one of my goals for this cleanse.

We wanted to do the cleanse mainly to shrink our appetites and conquer our sugar cravings. It’s been two weeks and I can say that IT WORKED! Both of us have noticed we are eating less at meals and not craving the sugary junk like we used to. Although I have gained back about half of what I lost that week, I am happy with the outcome. I didn’t expect the weight to stay off once I started eating food again, but I am pleased that half has.

Now we are continuing to work hard to exercise and get those veggies in each day while continuing to cut the crap!! If you have any questions or want to learn more, please find me on

Top 5 Tips:

  1. Use day one as a test day to see how you react to the Digest & Cleanse softgels. You may react differently than us and need to run to the bathroom. Be prepared for that!
  2. Use a cup designed to mix protein drinks (or other powdery drinks)- the ones with the balls in them to make sure it mixes up well. I used a magic bullet for mine because we only had one of those shaky cups. I work in a small office with a kitchen, so it wasn’t a big deal to bring that to work with me each day.
  3. Use a straw!! This helps so much if you don’t like the taste of the Balance Complete. I didn’t think it was horrible but by day 3 or 4 I was so over it! Being able to gulp it down and not smell it really helped me.
  4. Prepare your snacks the night before! You want to have those snacks ready whenever you start to get hungry. Having our snacks ready and with us between meals helped to not even second guess what we would reach for.
  5. Do it with a friend!!! It was so helpful having Andrew by my side during this cleanse. He wasn’t eating yummy dinners while I was drinking a shake for my meal. We were toasting our cups together and eating our prepared snacks. It really helped to have him by my side! (Even if he was talking all week about the pizza he was going to eat on Saturday!)

The Ditch and Switch

It's a new year. So many people are making changes, including us. The biggest one for me is no more dairy. I thought for sure I would die without cheese, but it turns out, I don't even miss it!?!?! How is that even possible, right!?

When we started using Young Living Essential Oils, we were excited about the idea of "Ditching and Switching". You know, trading your current products in for chemical free ones. We have been striving to make our house a chemical free home since even before starting with our oils, but then we discovered things like Carageenan were even in our "natural" toothpaste. Yuck!

Look at all of these TRULY Natural options...

So, we started thinking about how we could switch out some of the "natural" store bought brands of things like laundry detergent, hand soap, hand sanitizer, facial care products, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, body wash, body lotion, supplements and so many other products. One of our absolute favorite switches was chucking every single household cleaner we used and purchasing the Thieves Household Cleaner instead. It cleans every single surface in our home, even windows without streaking. It's truly amazing AND affordable. And the hand purifier. Every single person who tries it can't believe how silky it is and how nice it smells. It's a hit!

Look at it this way, if you shop at Target and have a red card, you get 5% back on your purchases. If you sign up for Essential Rewards with Young Living, you get 10% back to start and it goes all the way up to 20% back. It's HUGE savings.

We earned over $1000 in free product last year with Essential Rewards. You can't beat that.

So give it a try. Start the "DITCH AND SWITCH". You won't regret it!

You Can Never Have Enough Thieves

Last week, I walked into our house after having our house cleaned. As soon as I opened the door, I was hit in the face by the smell of chemicals. I knew our cleaning crew did not use our Thieves household cleaner. :( I literally got a headache within minutes and started feeling nauseous. My body is not used to chemicals anymore. That's a great thing, but makes the reaction even stronger when something like this happens. The owner was extremely apologetic and said our normal crew couldn't be there and she forgot to tell the team she sent. Mistakes happen and it was a great opportunity for me to share the Thieves Love with her. She actually had me order her her own bottle right then and there when I showed her how well it works even on mirrors and windows. I love that we've been able to replace every single cleaning product we used to use with this one. It's concentrated so it lasts forever. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out ;) Oh and hiring a cleaning lady is the best money we have ever spent. So thankful we are able to do that.

Did you now that Young Living carries lots of products in addition to the oils? Thieves products are some of our favorites. Thieves was inspired by the legend of four 15th century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination of Clove, Rosemary and other botanicals they used while robbing the dead and dying. All of these products include that special Thieves blend. Some of my favs are the Household Cleaner of course, the Hand Purifier (the silkiest hand sanitizer you will ever use), and my new favorite is the Thieves floss.

Finding Your Calm

Who doesn't need a little calm in their lives? Can I get an Amen!?
Did you know that there are certain oils that are scientifically proven to be more effective for calming our brains or helping us with occasional anxiety than other oils? Here's why: I explained it in my video, but here it is in text so that you can take notes. Some oils contain a compound called Sesquiterpenes. Sesquiterpenes allow these oils to surpass the blood/brain barrier. What does that mean, you ask? Well, they can miraculously reach the very part of our brains that is necessary in order for our brains to be calmed. Our amygdala is housed in our limbic part of the brain. Our amygdala can send us into Fight, Flight or Freeze when any of our senses are heightened. Our bodies are amazingly created to protect us from harm so they know to arm ourselves in fear when something is off, sensory speaking.
The example I gave is this, imagine you are in your living room and someone drops a pan in the kitchen. That loud crash sends your body into high alert. It's technically going into immediate fight flight or freeze mode. What happens to your brain? Here’s, the little brain lesson I shared. We have an Upstairs brain (responsible for rational, logical thought) and a Downstairs brain (it contains our survival reactions). When our body is sent into high alert, we no longer have access to our Upstairs brain. We are "stuck" in our Downstairs brain. Well, when that happens, we need our amygdala to be calmed in order for our body to give us access back to our rational, logical part of our brain, our Upstairs Brain. Oils high in sesquiterpenes do just that. They calm our amygdala, giving us access back to rational thought. Isn't that amazing!?!? The amygdala is reached through our sense of smell or olfactory system. Essential oils can reach this level of the brain while chemicals cannot because they are inhaled rather than ingested. Diffusing oils is an excellent way to get them into the air and into your olfactory system.
This is why many people find it helpful to diffuse calming oils, roll them on their chests or wear a diffuser necklace if they are experiencing occasional anxiety or if they are hoping to relax a get a good night’s sleep.
Here is a list of calming oils, most of which contain very high amounts of those sesquiterpenes I was talking about:
Stress Away
Do some research. If you need some calm in your life, find the combo that works for you and be empowered now knowing exactly why it's working for you!

Well, Hello Again

Well, Hello Again. It's me, Melissa, your good ole friend from You Were Born in Our Hearts. Please forgive me for the abrupt goodbye. Things were getting a tad too personal over here in blog land. We needed to take a break after bringing our little one home from China to decide what needed to be shared and what needed to remain private. It was HARD. If you know me, or were one of my faithful readers that got to know our story, you know I'm pretty much an open book. I feel like it's so important to share honestly about our struggles as an adoptive family. I was just struggling to make sure that I was sharing solely from my perspective and not what I perceived my children's perspective to be because I was ANGRY that it was that hard...angry at us for us for thinking we could do it again, angry at our child for not sleeping when he was traumatized (not my best self right there) and angry at God for calling us to it and disrupting the calm we had finally found a year and a half in with our oldest. I always wanted to be honoring to our children and their stories and I was letting my feelings get in the way of me doing that so I knew it was time to walk away for a while. It was definitely the right decision. I mean, I was even embarrassed by the name I chose for my blog, "You Were Born In Our Hearts." Ummm no. But, when you know better, you do better and let's face it, born in our hearts they were not. Both of my boys were born in their beautiful China Mamas bellies. That is the truth of our children's stories and we want there to be no confusion there. The sentiment behind the blog title was so well meaning and it's even somewhat sweet before you witness the trauma your child endures to become yours. When you sit and think about the gut wrenching decision those women had to make. You just won't ever hear the words "born in our hearts" ever come out of my mouth again.

But enough about the old blog. We are starting something brand new! Through the hard, we found HOPE. God used so many to speak to us about ways we could help our son. We discovered Young Living Essential Oils and our lives were changed forever. With a tiny little diffuser and two tiny bottles of oil, we had hope that things would get better. They have gotten more than better. You can read about why we chose to try our oils here and about trauma and the brain and how oils calm here. If you want to learn about our family and how we came to become Mama & Baba you can read about that here.

So, WELCOME! I'm so happy to be back sharing our journey with you all and I'm so happy you are here! Go grab a cup of coffee or maybe a glass of wine and stay awhile.
